Experience:

Spring photography in Lleida and El Taray: steppe birds, raptors and wetlands

Aguilucho Lagunero España
One experience, three seasonal variants. This spring photography trip takes you through two of the most dynamic birding regions in the Iberian Peninsula: the agricultural steppes of Lleida and the wetlands of El Taray. Depending on the dates, you’ll photograph different species and behaviors—great bustards in display in April, Montagu’s harriers and bee-eaters in May, or wetland passerines and limicoles.. In Cogulers, lammergeiers, Egyptian vultures and griffons complete the journey from the air. A versatile, ethical and highly productive photo experience designed around light, species activity and habitat diversity.

Day 1 – April

Little bustards at dawn, little owls at dusk
We start in the open farmlands of Montgai, photographing male little bustards in full display at first light.
In the afternoon, a hide session focused on the little owl, active in the late hours on regular perches within the agricultural mosaic.

Day 1 – May

Montagu’s harrier and European bee-eater in flight
The trip begins with two sessions in Montgai.
In the morning, we focus on Montagu’s harriers gliding over flowering crops and hunting areas.
In the afternoon, we work with European bee-eaters in flight and on perches, with warm sidelight and clean backgrounds.

Day 2 – April

Little bustards and hoopoes among crops
Morning session focused again on little bustards, capturing different light and behavior.
In the afternoon, we photograph hoopoes from a hide, using active perches and clean natural backgrounds near foraging zones.

Day 2 – May

Little owl and steppe waterhole
A day with two sessions in Montgai.
In the morning, a second session with little owls at a different site.
In the afternoon, we work from a hide at a small waterhole in steppe habitat, where species like rock sparrow, corn bunting or wheatears are frequent visitors

Day 3

Bearded vulture, Egyptian vulture and griffons in Cogulers
Full-day session in a high-mountain hide overlooking the rugged cliffs of Cogulers.
The site remains active throughout the day, with regular visits from bearded vultures, Egyptian vultures and griffon vultures—both in flight and perched on natural rocks.
With clean light, strong backgrounds and a wild atmosphere, this is a day focused on dramatic compositions and behavioral shots.

Day 4 – April

Lesser kestrel and raptors in El Espartal
The day begins with a hide session at an active lesser kestrel colony, capturing breeding behavior, prey delivery and flight sequences.
In the afternoon, we move to El Espartal, a wide-open landscape with regular activity of raptors like black kite, marsh and booted harrier—ideal for clean flight shots over agricultural textures.

Day 4 – May

Lesser kestrel and European roller
Morning session with lesser kestrels in full breeding activity.
In the afternoon, we photograph European rollers from a hide next to active nest boxes—great for flight sequences, food delivery and courtship scenes.

Day 5

Reedbed passerines in the morning, marsh harrier in the afternoon
We begin the day in a dense reedbed, working from a hide with target species like bearded reedling, reed warblers and great reed warbler.
In the afternoon, we move to a fixed hide for marsh harriers, with sustained flight activity and well-positioned perches for clean, dynamic shots.
A full day blending fine detail and movement, light and habitat.

Day 6

Imperial eagle, marsh harrier and buzzard at Vegamazón
We end the trip at the Vegamazón hide, a dynamic, open space perfect for flight shots and interaction.
Marsh harrier and common buzzard are regulars here, but the true highlight is the Spanish imperial eagle—often seen perching or gliding in front of the hide.
Occasionally, a red fox may also visit the scene, adding an unexpected element to the day.
A final session with soft light and strong photographic potential to close the experience.
