Northern Iberian Spring: steppes, canyons, forests and mountains

An unforgettable photographic experience to capture, in just six days, iconic species such as the great bustard, Bonelli’s eagle, black woodpecker, bluethroat or Egyptian vulture. You’ll work from comfortable hides, strategically located for light, backdrop and animal activity, at a time of year defined by courtship displays, nuptial flights and the arrival of subalpine species to their breeding grounds. All of this across cereal steppes, Mediterranean canyons, Atlantic forests and subalpine mountains.

Days 1 & 2 – Great bustards in the Villafáfila steppes

Two full days dedicated to photographing great bustards from comfortable fixed wooden hides equipped with high-quality one-way glass.
Villafáfila hosts one of the highest bustard densities in Europe, allowing for efficient sessions without the need for tracking or relocation.
In spring, males display constantly and females move unpredictably through the area.
Our strategy relies on trust in the site: hides are positioned at key spots within the bustards’ activity range, maximizing chances of success. Sessions run from dawn to dusk, enabling work in different lighting conditions while minimizing disturbance through controlled access and silent waits.

Day 3 – Bonelli’s eagle in the Arribes del Duero canyons

Morning session from fixed wooden hides designed specifically for Bonelli’s eagle photography, in a stunning Mediterranean setting of high ecological value.
These hides are part of a conservation support program for one of the most sensitive raptors in the Iberian Peninsula.
Expect perched portraits as well as flight shots, with natural, clean backgrounds and ideal lateral lighting throughout the morning.
Adults regularly visit the site to feed, offering powerful and visually balanced photo opportunities.

Day 4 – Golden eagle in the Arribes del Duero canyons

Morning session from a fixed hide fully integrated into the rocky landscape, ideal for close-up captures of one of Iberia’s most emblematic species: the golden eagle.
A local pair of adult birds has visited this location regularly for over a decade.
Their dark, compact plumage—distinctive of the Iberian population—provides a striking visual contrast to other European subspecies.
The hide features high-quality one-way glass and is positioned for clean backgrounds and excellent lateral lighting. Expect images of perched birds, feeding behavior, and approach or departure flights.

Day 5 – Woodpeckers and forest birds in the Atlantic forests of Riaño

Full day of forest photography from two separate hides located in mature oak woodlands and moist mountain habitats.
These well-preserved, controlled-access forests host a rich diversity of active species during spring.
Top targets include the impressive black woodpecker, along with wryneck, middle spotted woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker and Iberian green woodpecker.
Also likely are numerous forest passerines: Eurasian nuthatch, great tit, marsh tit, blue tit, robin, blackcap, bullfinch, chaffinch, goldfinch, greenfinch…
Occasionally also hawfinch, brambling, song thrush or yellowhammer.
The wooden hides are carefully oriented, with natural backgrounds and selected perches to ensure soft light and clean frames throughout the sessions.
Morning and afternoon sessions are complementary, providing a variety of behavior, light and species across the day.

Day 6 – Subalpine and scavenger birds in the Riaño Mountains

Morning – Subalpine birds

A guided 4×4 excursion to high mountain areas between 1,800–2,000 meters above sea level.
We’ll work at selected locations chosen for their accessibility, light and bird activity, deploying portable camouflage hides at key spots.
The session alternates between locations to photograph species like bluethroat, common rock thrush, ring ouzel, and frequent companions such as northern wheatear, rock bunting, water pipit, dunnock, and sometimes tawny pipit, European stonechat or subalpine warbler.
The scenery features alpine meadows, rock outcrops and broom thickets, with strong glacial character and changing light that enhances compositional creativity.
This half-day session delivers high-value images, both portraits and wide scenic compositions that integrate the environment.

Afternoon – Scavenger birds

Afternoon session from a fixed scavenger hide, perched on a steep slope overlooking a dramatic montane valley.
Set on an old agricultural terrace for stability and perspective, the hide faces a dramatic limestone crest that forms a spectacular background and creates a powerful sense of immersion.
Thanks to thermal updrafts rising from the valley, raptors approach in sustained flight, offering prolonged photo opportunities.
Expect elegant gliding shots, controlled landings on natural perches, and interactions between species.
The hide allows for flight, ground behavior and multi-species scenes, with clean backgrounds and optimal light.
Frequent visitors include griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture and black kite, with occasional sightings of red kite, common buzzard, raven, carrion crow or even red fox.
Golden eagle may appear sporadically.
