With a degree in journalism from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a diploma in photography from the London College of Printing, Canela has been dedicated to documenting nature and environmental issues since 1994.
His extensive career includes photographing diverse ecosystems across five continents, from deserts and rainforests to glaciers and mountains. Canela has documented endangered species such as Bengal tigers in India, pandas in China, gray whales in Baja California, and polar bears in the Arctic. In the Iberian Peninsula, he has focused on emblematic species like the brown bear, Iberian wolf, lynx, bearded vulture, and imperial eagle.
Canela’s work has been featured in prominent publications including National Geographic, BBC Wildlife, Newsweek, and El País. He has authored over a dozen books, notable among them Sleeping Among Wolves, La llamada del puma, and Territorio Lobo, which delve into the lives of wild animals and their habitats.
His documentary films, such as Looking for the Wild and Panteras, showcase his commitment to wildlife conservation and have been recognized in various film festivals. In 2009, he received the Godó Prize for Photojournalism for his report on the Iberian wolf.
Through his lens, Canela continues to inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the urgent need to protect it.
